Enquiries to a criminal defence barrister are sensitive by nature. This policy explains what personal information is collected through this website, how it is used, and your rights under the Privacy Act 2020.

  • All enquiries treated as strictly confidential
  • Information used only to respond to and manage your enquiry
  • Never sold or shared for marketing
  • You can request access or correction at any time

Who we are

This website is operated by Sam Gunn, Barrister, of 2 Chancery Street, Auckland CBD, New Zealand ("we", "us"). For anything relating to this policy or your personal information, contact sam@samgunn.co.nz or call 022 690 5828.

What we collect

If you submit the enquiry form, we collect the information you provide: your name, phone number, email address, the type of matter, and any description you choose to give. If you contact us by phone or email, we collect the information you provide in that communication. You are not required to provide any particular information, but without contact details we may be unable to respond.

How it is used

Your information is used solely to respond to your enquiry, to provide legal services if you engage Sam, and to keep records that a barrister is professionally required to keep. It is not used for marketing, is not added to any mailing list, and is never sold or shared with third parties for their own purposes.

Confidentiality

All enquiries are treated as strictly confidential, whether or not you go on to instruct Sam. Where a barrister–client relationship is formed, your information is additionally protected by legal professional privilege and the confidentiality obligations in the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 and the Rules of Conduct and Client Care.

How it is stored

Form submissions are processed by Netlify, the service that hosts this website, and delivered to Sam. Netlify stores submissions on servers that may be located outside New Zealand (including the United States). Email correspondence is held in Sam's email service. Reasonable safeguards are used to protect your information against loss, misuse, and unauthorised access, and it is kept only as long as needed for the purposes above or as required by professional record-keeping obligations.

Website data

This website uses Google Ads conversion tracking, which sets cookies to measure whether visitors who arrive from our advertising go on to call or send an enquiry. This measures advertising effectiveness in aggregate; the content of your enquiry is never shared with Google. You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google's ads settings. Fonts are served by Google Fonts, which means your browser sends a standard request (including your IP address) to Google when the page loads. The contact page embeds a Google Map, which is subject to Google's own privacy policy. Netlify, as host, keeps standard server logs (such as IP addresses) for security and operational purposes.

Your rights

Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you and to ask for it to be corrected. To do so, contact sam@samgunn.co.nz. If you have concerns about how your information has been handled, you can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated from time to time. The current version will always be available on this page. This policy was last updated in July 2026.
